Savas-Kostas Outstanding Faculty Award
|Glenna L. Hatfield|
Ms. Glenna L. Hatfield is a Professor of Health and Fitness and has been with the Southern family since 1976. She is a three-time recipient of the Savas-Kostas Award for Excellence, having earned it in 1985 and 2003, which reflects the consistency of her instructional excellence. This "Professor of Fitness" believes the best education combines the total wellness of the mind and body.
Professor Hatfield has taught thousands of students over the years, but most recently she has been applauded for her training assistance and nutritional advice that she has provided to faculty and staff. One employee stated that due to Ms. Hatfield's expertise, she has lost 50 pounds and has lowered her body fat percentage significantly. Much like a personal trainer, Professor Hatfield has designed exercise routines for employees based upon their individual health needs and skill levels. She has performed these activities on her own time, with no additional pay, while maintaining a full schedule of student-filled classes.
Professor Hatfield is an avid tennis player, has competed in the USTA League Tennis National Championships, and has won several gold medals. Her enthusiasm is contagious and shows in every project in which she becomes involved, such as Southern's Wellness Center.
Ms. Hatfield grew up in Freeburn, Kentucky and graduated from Phelps High School. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from Pikeville College, a Master's Degree from Morehead State University, and has additional graduate studies at Marshall University. She resides in Williamson, West Virginia.
