Southern Bestows 2007 President's Award

Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College President Joanne Jaeger Tomblin recently awarded the 2007 President's Award to Administrative Vice-President and Dean of Allied Health Pamela L. Alderman. The presentation was made during All College Day held at the Logan Campus.

The President's Award was established to recognize an outstanding college employee that demonstrates a commitment to the college and is dedicated to making the community a better place.

When presenting the 2007 award, President Tomblin said, "This year's recipient is a leader, not only at Southern but also the state. She is respected by her colleagues and those in her profession, and is a model for her faculty and students. I can not remember a time that this individual, when asked to assist, create, write, or do whatever it takes to get a job accomplished, did not step up to the plate."

Alderman graduated from Southern in 1977 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Nursing and an Associate in Arts in General Studies. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1987 from West Virginia University and a Master of Science degree in Nursing in 1990 from WVU.

Alderman began her career at Southern in 1987 as a nursing instructor and has served in many leadership roles. Under her guidance, all six Allied Health programs now hold national accreditation. The medical laboratory technology program has been recognized in the top 2% nationwide, the surgical technology program is ranked in the top 10% nationwide and the nursing program is highly recognized both in the state and the region.

Alderman was recently re-appointed to serve a third consecutive term as President of the West Virginia Board of Registered Professional Nurses. She served on the Board Education Committee prior to becoming president.

Alderman serves as a founding member of the West Virginia Center for Nursing Board of Directors, appointed by Governor Joe Manchin in 2005. She serves on the nominations committee for the National Organization for Associate Degree Nurses and the Southern Regional Education Board Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing. She is a member of the National League for Nursing, the American Nurses Association, the West Virginia Nurses Association, the Nursing Education Foundation of West Virginia, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, Logan Chapter #60 Order of the Eastern Star, assistant leader Junior Girl Scout Troop 4754 and serves on various committees at Southern

She resides in Chapmanville with her husband, Bill. They have two children, Will and Whitlea. The Aldermans enjoy spending time with their granddaughter, Jorgia.
