Beverly Slone - April 2010 Faculty of the Month

Beverly Slone is very deserving of being honored as Faculty of the Month.  She is a wonderful teacher, she is very involved in community service, and she goes to great lengths to give extra help to anyone who needs it.  First of all, she is a wonderful teacher.  Bev is always prepared for class and always enthusiastic and energetic with her students.  When I observe her, I always see her commitment to teaching a difficult subject in the best way possible.  As a math teacher, she spends untold amounts of time preparing overhead transparencies with math problems, for instance, so that she can work them with her students as examples.  She has also developed math games to reinforce important concepts.  Next, Bev engages in a significant amount of community service, both related and unrelated to her field.  She helps with scouting events and also participates in school and county Coal Fair and social studies fair scoring.   Finally, Bev goes out of her way to help others.  For example, one weekend, a Marshall instructor was teaching a class at Williamson Campus.  She had difficulty finding a classroom with computers that was open, and when she did, she did not know the login information to get her students on the college network; she also did not have the necessary information to use the multimedia projector.  I called Bev at 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning for the login information and also gave the instructor Bev's home phone number in case of future problems.  Naturally, before Bev started her own plans for the day, she went to campus to make sure the Marshall faculty member had what she needed.  These examples are just a few of the great many that I could cite as evidence that Bev Slone is a terrific asset to Southern.
