Southern Offers Green Basics

Green Southern

Thinking about a career in the field of green technology?

New classes will be offered in January 2011 at Southern’s Logan Campus!

What Is Green Basics?

Green Basics is a course that explores green (environmentally-friendly) technical careers while also improving students’ skills in reading comprehension, writing, and basic mathematics.

Green Basics is a cooperative program with Region 2 Workforce Investment Board, WV Adult Basic Education, and Southern.  The classes are team-taught with college faculty members and GED teachers.  These teachers are specially trained to assist students in meeting individual academic needs.

Who Can Enroll?

High school graduates who need to improve basic math, reading, and writing skills and who are interested in technical careers.
Individuals who want to find out about technical careers while also working on a GED.

What Should I Expect?

Students who enroll in Green Basics program will receive:
Information about a variety of green technical careers.
Introduction to college.
Assessment of academic strengths and weaknesses.
Intense, personalized instruction.
Instruction to help “fill in the gaps” in order to successfully complete college courses.
Assistance with setting academic and career goals.
Assessment and referral for appropriate support services.

How Does Green Basics Work?

Green Basics is a reduced-cost program for most students.  Instructors use a mixture of instructional techniques to assist students, including one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, and individual work.  Attendance is an important part of achieving success in the Green Basics program.  Students will spend approximately 3 hours in class each day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings during Southern’s 14-week trimester.
