For the Fall 2008 semester Southern offers distance learning opportunities using the following instructional formats. Click on the links below for detailed information about each mode of delivery and to discover if on-line learning is for you.
Correspondence courses are designed for students with strong organizational skills. Instructors will mail students a course packet after registration, and students will mail back completed assignments as scheduled.
Available Correspondence courses are reflected on the on-line schedule for Fall 2008. Students who live more than an hour's drive away from campus may make alternate proctoring arrangements with the instructor.
HEITV (Higher Education Instructional Television) courses are broadcast over West Virginia Public Broadcasting stations.
Note: This is a TV-based course. This course meets on the Williamson campus usually on Saturdays. For availability of HEITV courses, browse Southern's on-line schedule. |
On-line classes are the ultimate in convenience for students. This type of instructional delivery does not require the students to be physically present in the same location or at the same time as the instructor. Students attend class and complete course assignments via the Internet. Web browsing ability and e-mail proficiency are minimal requirements. Communication between student and the instructor occurs through e-mail or chat room sessions. Some courses may require visits to campus.

Southern's on-line courses are powered by WebCT. WebCT is one of the world's leading providers of e-learning systems.
The Southern Regional Education Board's Electronic Campus was founded more than 50 years ago as a way for states to improve and share resources in higher education. The SREB continues to organize and administer regional arrangements to avoid costly duplication and expensive development of new programs. Another long-standing effort, the Academic Common Market, provides access to undergraduate and graduate programs in specialized areas. The Electronic Campus of the SREB provides a link to distance learning courses and programs offered by more than 300 colleges and universities. Southern is a member of the Southern Regional Education Board's Electronic Campus. Currently Southern's Managerial Accounting (AC 249) and Adolescent Literature (EN 219) are listed on the SREB's Electronic Campus.
AC 249 is a study of how accounting data can be interpreted and used by management in planning and controlling business activities of the firm. The uses of accounting data by investors, quantitative methods, and organizational behavior are also considered.
EN 219 emphasizes the reading and evaluation of literature written for and by young adults (middle, junior, and senior high school students). By analyzing reading resources, the reading interests, and developmental needs of adolescents and by classroom observations of reading/literature instruction, the student will develop the ability to help students to select literature for independent reading and guide them in analyzing group reading choices. Strategies to stimulate reading for information and for pleasure will include the reading of a wide variety of adolescent literature reflecting cultural, ethnic, social and sex role differences in a multi-cultural society.
