Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College Sees Enrollment Boost in spite of COVID-19 Challenges

Mount Gay, W.Va. – Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College saw an increase in student enrollment for its Fall 2020 semester, in spite of difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fall enrollment at Southern increased five percent from the previous year, with a total headcount of 1,346 students. This is the largest increase in full-time enrollment for Southern in more than ten years.

Southern’s President, Dr. Pamela L. Alderman, said the increase was due in part to a strong collaboration among different college departments.

“It was a strategic effort for our students and the communities we serve,” Dr. Alderman said. “Our staff and faculty work hard to provide opportunities for students, and we strive to provide flexible opportunities for students to register and speak with advisors.”

Most colleges throughout the state saw a decrease in enrollment this fall. Southern was one of only five colleges in the state with an increase.

Southern is currently registering students for our Spring 2021 semester. Registration will be ongoing until the semester begins on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.
