Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is fortunate to have investors such as community organizations, corporations and foundations who value community relationships and support education. As a corporation, giving back to your community is not only good business; it is an investment that yields great dividends, improved lives, and a transformed community.

Southern prospers when corporations and foundations financially support our education and workforce missions through major gifts and matching gift programs. We are proud to have developed many partnerships with businesses throughout West Virginia and we continue to search for new partnerships with corporations and foundations.

Gifts in-kind

In-kind donations are goods and services provided at no cost to the Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation in lieu of a monetary gift. Provided the gift is one that meets a college need, we appreciate gifts of non-cash tangible assets which may be used to further the education and training of students, or gifts which benefit the administrative operations of the College. Individuals and representatives of businesses and corporations interested in making in-kind donations are asked to contact Dr. Pamela Alderman, President at 304-896-7439 or Rita Roberson, Director of Development at 304-896-7425 to discuss potential equipment before making such a gift.

Appraisals

The donor must obtain an appraisal executed by a qualified independent appraiser for any non-cash contribution which exceeds $5,000. The appraisal summary section of IRS Form 8283 must be completed and attached to your income tax return on which the deduction is claimed.

No appraisal is required for a gift of publicly traded securities for which market quotations are readily available on an established securities market.

Matching Gifts

When you make a gift to the Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation, you can increase the amount, the significance, and the impact of your gift by taking advantage of a corporate matching gift program. Thousands of companies provide matching gifts for their employees and retirees and some provide matching gifts for gifts made by spouses of employees and retirees. These programs allow you, as an employee, to direct your organization’s corporate philanthropy to the benefit of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College when they match your personal gift. Inquire at your human resources or employee benefits office to determine if your company will match your gift. There are also some foundations and associations that provide matching funds.

Planned Gifts

Planned giving is a powerful philanthropic vehicle available to donors of the Vision 2020 Major Gifts Campaign.  A planned gift is any charitable gift which is structured to optimize an individual’s tax, financial, and/or estate plans.  Planned gifts often utilize the expertise of financial and legal advisors and are often deferred gifts.  A planned gift allows a donor to support Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College yet defer the actual transfer of those assets to a time in the future.  Making a deferred gift and providing for the College in a will are important ways to assure the ongoing strength of the institution.  Options for planned giving include:

Bequests

Remembering Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in your will removes assets from the donor’s estate and reduces its exposure to federal taxes.  Bequests can include gifts in the form of cash, stocks, bonds, or real estate; a specified percentage of your estate; or the residue of your estate (property remaining after other bequests have been fulfilled.)  Be sure to work closely with your attorney if you want the Southern Foundation to be the recipient of a future gift.

Deferred Gifts

Deferred gifts may be used to provide for the future of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. One example of this type of gift is a trust.  Under such an arrangement, you can provide for one or more individuals to receive income from an asset during their lifetime, and then at their death the principal would go to the College.  Another method of making a deferred gift is through a charitable gift annuity.  When setting up a deferred gift, it is important to work with a representative of the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College Development Office and consult your tax adviser or attorney.

Life Insurance

Life insurance can be a convenient and cost-effective way of making a substantial gift for the future of the College.  Gift opportunities range from naming the College as owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy to using life insurance to replace assets given to the College.  Under the latter arrangement, the donor makes a significant gift to the College and uses the tax savings to purchase a life insurance policy.  The policy will replace the contributed funds for the future of the donor’s family.

Retirement Savings

Naming the College as a beneficiary of a portion of your retirement funds is another way for a donor to create a lasting legacy at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.  In the event you wish to make this type of gift, please contact the administrator or person in charge of your individual retirement account, profit sharing count, or other retirement plan to list the College. Retirement plans are a desirable means of making charitable gifts because of the high tax burden associated with passing these assets on to non-charitable recipients.

Property, Stocks, and Securities

Gifts of property, stocks and/or securities which you have held long enough to qualify as long-term investments may provide tax advantages to you while providing a larger contribution to the College.  A charitable gift of this type, rather than cash, may enable you to avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciated investments, and you receive a deduction for their full market value on the date of your gift.

Gifts of this type are coordinated by Rita Roberson, Director of Development at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.  She can be reached via e-mail at or via phone at 304-896-7425. Before making a gift of property, stock or securities, please first contact the Office of Development.  We will provide the necessary information to make sure the transaction is handled to your specifications and you receive proper credit for your gift.

How can I make an outright gift of stock via electronic transfer?

Giving stock through electronic transfer is the easiest method when a donor maintains holdings in a brokered account.  Depository Trust Company, or DTC, is the clearinghouse for electronic security transfers.  Each brokerage firm has a specific DTC number.

Please contact Rita Roberson, Director of Development, by e-mail or by telephone at 304-896-7425, before the transfer so that the Foundation can make arrangements to receive the stock. The Foundation cannot sell an unidentified security.  At the same time, please indicate the purpose of the contribution, such as an annual gift, a pledge payment, or funds for a planned gift.

Where to Direct Your Gift

The Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation is the official recipient for all gifts to the campaign and to the College. Checks should be made payable to the Foundation and mailed to:

Vision 2020 Major Gifts Campaign
P. O. Box 2020
Mount Gay, West Virginia 25637

If you need the Foundation’s tax ID number, please e-mail the ">Office of Development or call 304-896-7425.
