The Academy for Mine Training and Energy Technologies provides training for individuals who are interested in a career in the mining and/or energy technology industries. The Academy also delivers customized, on-site training for companies in the industry.

CDL Class

CDL Permit Information
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit information
Charleston Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

Applicants must:
- You must obtain your CDL permit from the DMV prior to taking this CDL class
- Obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical before applying for the CDL test card
- Apply for a CDL test card
Applicants must bring:
- birth certificate or a permanent resident card
- DOT physical
Information:
- The CDL test card is $32.50
- Endorsements are $10 each after the initial test card
- The CDL test card is valid for six months, and applications have three attempts to pass the written test (if an applicant doesn’t pass on the third attempt, make sure to obtain a second or third chance test card before leaving the DMV)
- The applicant must be at least 18 years old
- A CDL instruction permit may only be issued to a person who has held a Level 3 (IP3) Graduated Driver’s License, or higher, for at least one year
- Applicants must hold a CDL instruction permit for a minimum of 14 days before they are eligible to take the road skills test
CDL Checklist
The following must be completed before class begins:
- DOT physical
- Obtain your CDL permit at the DMV office in Charleston, WV (or Frankfort, KY)
- Work out a payment arrangement with the Business Office at Southern or Workforce WV
The student will need the following items on the first day of class:
- Copy of tuition receipt
- Copy of DMV driving record
- Copy of CDL permit
- Copy of Social Security card
This program is on the Williamson campus only
Students will take a drug screen the first week of class (students are responsible for payment)
The class is 6 weeks
Class is Monday – Thursday, 8 AM – 3:30 PM (subject to change)
Examiners fee is $100 (students are responsible for payment) – if the student fails (for any reason), the exam has to be retaken and the student has to pay the fee again
Upon passing the final exam, students will receive their license from the DMV within two days

Lineman/CDL Checklist
Overall Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a driver’s license for at least one year with no violations
The following must be completed before class begins:
- DOT physical
- Obtain a CDL permit at the Charleston, WV (or Frankfort, KY) DMV office
- Work out a payment arrangement with Southern’s Business Office or Workforce WV
- Pre-assessment test
The following must be given to the Southern Academy for Mine Training and Energy Technologies:
- Copy of tuition receipt
- Copy of DMV driving record
- Copy of CDL permit
- Copy of Social Security card
- Copy of DOT physical
This program is on the Williamson campus only
Students will take a drug screen the first week of class (students are responsible for payment)
The class is 16 weeks
Class is Monday – Thursday, 8 AM – 4 PM (subject to change)
Program pre-assessment (prospects will be tested for natural climbing ability, strength, and agility):
- Long sleeve shirt
- Jeans or work pants
- Boots with a prominent heel (1 inch)
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
