Southern Faculty Member Receives National Recognition for Leadership and Excellence in Surgical Technology Education

Professor Meloney McRoberts, recognized nationally for leadership in surgical technology education, stands outside on Southern’s campus.

Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College proudly recognizes Professor Meloney McRoberts, AAS, CST, FAST, for her outstanding contributions to surgical technology education and her recent national recognition from the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).

A dedicated educator and advocate for the surgical technology profession, McRoberts has served Southern for more than 24 years. A West Virginia native and a 2001 graduate of Southern, she currently serves as Professor and Clinical Coordinator of the Surgical Technology Program, where she develops curriculum, coordinates clinical education experiences, and ensures students achieve the highest standards of clinical competence.

Known for her enthusiasm, positivity, and unwavering commitment to student success, McRoberts has played a vital role in preparing generations of healthcare professionals. Her dedication to excellence has earned her Southern’s prestigious Savas-Kostas Award for Excellence twice, first in 2019 and again in 2026.

Most recently, McRoberts was honored at the 2026 ARC/STSA National Conference in Seattle, Washington, for her exceptional service as an accreditation site evaluator. Recognized under the conference theme, “Evaluating Standards and Empowering Educators,” she was named one of only nine evaluators nationwide to receive the distinguished Legend Designation, an honor awarded to individuals who have completed five or more accreditation site visits.

McRoberts was selected from about 40 evaluators nationwide. Her recognition highlights her commitment to advancing quality education and accreditation standards for surgical technology and surgical assisting programs nationwide.

McRoberts has been actively involved with the West Virginia Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) State Assembly for more than eight years. During that time, she has served as a Board Director, Vice President, President for six years, and currently serves as Treasurer. Her leadership has helped strengthen the profession and increase awareness of the critical role surgical technologists play in patient care.

In 2021, McRoberts received one of the profession’s highest honors when she was awarded the Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists (FAST) designation at the AST National Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also serves on the AST Education and Professional Standards Committee, where she contributes to developing educational and curricular standards that guide surgical technology programs across the United States.

Through her leadership, service, and commitment to excellence, McRoberts continues to elevate the field of surgical technology while inspiring future healthcare professionals to achieve their full potential.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, McRoberts enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and creating lasting memories with her husband of 30 years, Greg, their three children, and five grandchildren.
