Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College Welcomes Tony Holland during faculty convocation

On Monday, August 12, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College welcomed Tony Holland, Vice Chancellor for Teaching, Learning, and Academics for the Alabama Community College System. Holland served as keynote speaker during the faculty convocation, and helped welcome back Southern’s faculty ahead of the start of its Fall 2019 semester.

Holland discussed, among other things, his creation and implementation of the I-CAN (Improvement, Constant And Never-ending) instructional initiative.

I-CAN fosters an active environment in classes, encouraging student engagement, relevant instruction, and supportive relationships. It promotes a deeper, more critical learning. It is also a faculty-driven initiative, which is crucial to the success of the program.

“Tony Holland is a star in the academic world, and we’re thrilled to host him to speak with our faculty and get them ready for our new academic year,” Dr. Robert Gunter, Southern’s President, said. “Tony is very inspirational, and this is a great way to get everyone excited and welcome back our students for a great year!”

Holland served six years as Dean of Instructional Affairs at Wallace Community College (WCCD) in Dothan, Ala., and 22 years as a chemistry instructor there, while concurrently serving over ten of those years as Division Director for Natural Sciences.

Prior to entering the field of education, Mr. Holland served as cadet commander of the University of Alabama Army ROTC program where he earned the nation’s highest award for a military cadet, the George C. Marshall Leadership Award. Serving four years as an Army paratrooper, he became the youngest U.S. Army company commander in Korea in 1982.
