Founded on April 21, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois, Sigma Kappa Delta was created under the auspices of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society for four-year institutions. The organization was incorporated in Missouri that same year as a not-for-profit educational entity with a mission to recognize and promote excellence in the study of the English language and literature at the two-year college level.

Sigma Kappa Delta derives its name from the Greek initials for its official motto: Sincerity, Knowledge, and Design (ΣΚΔ). The Society’s official colors are green and gold, and its symbolic plant is English Ivy.

Southern’s chapter is supported by a dedicated team of faculty co-advisors, including Larry D’Angelo, Nathan Freeman, Tehseen Irfan, Matthew Mayo, Kaylee Taylor-Miller, and Lillie Teeters.

This new chapter reflects Southern’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and literary achievement.
