Southern WV Community & Technical College to Host Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship Softball Tournament

In addition to winning bragging rights, each member of the winning team will receive a championship ring this year as Southern WV Community & Technical College sponsors the Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship Softball Tournament on Saturday, September 13th, at 10 am. The tournament will feature 14 teams this year and be held at the Chief Logan Recreation Center.

Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College will host the Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship Softball Tournament on Saturday, September 13, at 10:00 a.m. at the Chief Logan Recreation Center.

The annual event raises funds and awareness for a scholarship established to honor the life and legacy of Sgt. Cory Maynard, a fallen hero remembered for his dedication and service to his community.

What began as a simple two-team game has grown into a full-fledged tournament featuring 14 registered teams this year. Admission is $5 per person or $20 per family, with all proceeds benefiting the Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship.

“We want this event and this scholarship to honor his legacy,” said R. Stacy Dingess, Chief External Affairs Officer at Southern.

The scholarship has already reached its goal of $50,000, fully endowing the fund. Two scholarship recipients were named last year, and seven more have applied for this year’s awards. The 2025 scholarship recipients will be announced soon.

According to Dingess, the Sgt. Cory Maynard Scholarship is designed to support first responders and their immediate families who choose to further their education at Southern.

“The scholarship funds will benefit first responders and their immediate families who choose to pursue any degree or certification program at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College,” Dingess said. “Recipients may include police, fire, EMS, and dispatch personnel at the city, county, state, or federal level.”

Applications for the scholarship are available through Southern’s normal financial aid process and are subject to the college’s financial aid guidelines.
