Scholarships
Since 2006, the Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation has distributed more than $1.2 million dollars in scholarships to local students, and more than $554,000 in education program development and marketing funds to Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
Adult Basic Education/Eddie Canterbury Educational Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Mr. Eddie Canterbury, former CEO and President of Logan Bank and Trust. The scholarship recognizes the importance and value of higher education. All students in need of financial assistance who are enrolled in a degree-seeking program at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College may apply for this scholarship. Priority consideration will be given to G.E.D. recipients. Attach to the application an essay, 300 words or less, explaining how a college education will assist you in achieving your goals. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
A.D. Scaggs, Jr. Scholarship
Established in 2005 by local businessmen Owen Osenton, Neal Scaggs and families to honor their late business partner, A. D. “Buster” Scaggs. This scholarship is designated for graduating seniors from Man High School, Logan High School, and Chapmanville Regional High School. Recipients must be residents of Logan County and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Amount: $300-$600 per academic year; limited to two semesters per recipient. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Ann Victoria Phillips Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2017 in memory of Ann Victoria Phillips. Ann was from Richmond, KY, formerly of Burnwell, KY, and a graduate of Belfry High School. She had been a teacher in the Richmond school system. The scholarship is restricted to students who attend classes at the Williamson Campus, students must express an interest in pursuing a baccalaureate degree at a four-year institution, and the scholarship award will be based on financial need and/or academic performance. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Barney Frazier, Jr. Scholarship
Established in 2007 by Man High School graduates, Jacqueline and Barney Frazier. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Man High School and the recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher. The award amount is $500 per academic year. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Credit Bureau of the Virginias at Wyoming Campus
Established in 2000 by the Credit Bureau of The Virginias Foundation, Inc. The mission of the Credit Bureau of The Virginias is to assist students in obtaining a degree, certification, skill or trade. The scholarship is available to students attending the Wyoming/McDowell Campus of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and who reside in Wyoming or McDowell counties. Applicant’s high school GPA must be within the range of 2.0 to 3.0. The scholarship award may be used for tuition, textbooks and/or fees. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship and be in good academic standing (GPA 2.0 or higher) to be eligible. The priority deadline to submit this application is August 1 for the Fall semester and December 1 for the Spring semester.
The Eiland Family Scholarship
Established in 2019, in memory of the late Edward Eiland. Mr. Eiland was a graduate of West Virginia University and the West Virginia University School of Law and had practiced law for more than 70 years. The Eiland Family Scholarship may be used for tuition, textbooks, fees, any related educational expenses and/or general support to assist students in furthering their education while attending Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Graduates from all three high schools in Logan County, West Virginia who are or will be attending Southern may apply. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15 for the Fall semester and October 15 for the Spring semester.
Everett and Mary Thompson Endowment Scholarship
Established by the family of the late Everett and Mary Thompson, residents of Mingo County and business leaders. Applicants must be a graduate of Mingo Central High School, have minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher, and provide a brief statement expressing your background, college plans, and why you should receive this scholarship. Award amounts vary and may be used for tuition and/or textbooks. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Dee and Sam Kapourales Scholarship
Dee and Sam Kapourales, lifelong residents of Mingo County and civic leaders, established this scholarship to make educational opportunities available to students in southern West Virginia. Applicants must be a graduating senior from Mingo Central High School and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Award amounts vary and may be used for tuition and/or textbooks. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Melvin Riggs Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2005 from the estate of the late Melvin Riggs. Mr. Riggs was a retired businessman from Lake Havasu, Arizona, and formerly from Logan, West Virginia. Applicants must be non-traditional students (age 22 or older), demonstrate financial need, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Award amounts vary and may be used for tuition and/or textbooks. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship.
Submit application by April 15 for the Fall semester and by October 15 for the Spring semester.
Mike McGraw Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2012 in memory of Mike McGraw. Mike was the former campus director of the Wyoming/McDowell Campuses of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Applicants must reside in Wyoming County, be a non-traditional student (age 22 or older), volunteer in the community or civic events/organizations, and have a current GPA of 2.5 or higher. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. The priority deadline to submit this application is August 1 for the Fall semester and December 1 for the Spring semester.
Osenton Family Scholarship
Established in May 2001 by Phyllis and Owen Osenton of Logan, West Virginia. Phyllis is a retired educator from the Logan County school system and her husband, Owen, is a retired businessman. Both are graduates of Man High School. Applicants must be a graduating senior at Man High School who will attend Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, must write a 50-100 word essay describing your educational goals, your community/civic involvement, why you should receive the scholarship and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Award amount is $1,000 per academic year and may be used for tuition and/or textbooks. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Pardee Resources Company Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Pardee Resources Company, which owns and manages land holdings in southern and central West Virginia and Pennsylvania, including properties in Boone, Logan, Mingo, and Wyoming Counties. Their roots in West Virginia go back to the late 1800s, when founder, Calvin Pardee, purchased his first property in Logan County. Award pays for tuition, textbooks, and/or related educational expenses up to $2,500 per academic year for students residing in Logan, Mingo, Boone, and Wyoming Counties. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship.
Submit application by April 15 for the Fall semester and by October 15 for the Spring semester.
Shell Family Scholarship
Established in 2006 by native Logan Countian and Huntington resident, Robert Shell, Jr., his wife, Lena, mother Doris, and other Shell family members. Designated for students planning to graduate from Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College with plans to continue their educational goals at Marshall University. Applicants must be a graduating senior from Logan High School and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award amount is $1,000 per academic year and may be used for tuition and/or textbooks. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application by April 15.
Otto and Iris K. Vance Scholarship
Established in 2019 by former Logan resident Danny Vance in honor of his parents, Otto and Iris K. Vance. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is enrolled in a technical degree program at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Applicants must be a graduate of Logan High School with preference given to students who are residents of Mud Fork, West Virginia (Logan County). The award pays tuition, textbooks, and/or educational expenses up to $2,500 per academic year. Students must complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. Submit application on or before July 15.
Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation Scholarship
All students enrolled in degree-seeking programs at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College may complete this application to be considered for a scholarship. These are “last dollar scholarships” designed to provide funds to those students who have an unmet financial need after applying for other sources of assistance. If a student receives a scholarship, it will be counted in determining his/her financial need and may be reduced, if the scholarship, when combined with other sources of assistance, more than meets the student’s documented financial need.
The Southern Foundation will make scholarships available starting at $500.00 per academic year to eligible students. The scholarship award may be more depending on the individual financial needs of the student who is applying for the scholarship. The scholarships may be renewable, based on student financial need (determined annually), program status, and funding availability. All students in need of financial assistance are encouraged to apply.
